The road home leads back through Gunnison. This time I will forsake the back roads for I-70 and a
quick stop at the Harley Dealership in Grand Junction. Then it's a short drive to Montrose and
my all-time favorite spot -- the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's unique and spectacular landscape was
formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock.
No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered
by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
The Black Canyon's awesome splendor still astounds me. The area has recently been upgraded from a
National Monument to a National Park. One can only hope that the increase in notoriety does little
to tarnish the quiet beauty of the Canyon.

From the Black Canyon, it's a short ride over Cerro Summit, and 50 or so miles back to Gunnison.
For some reason, I have always wanted to ride a motorcycle into Gunnison from the West on U.S. Highway 50,
especially the final 25 or so miles from Sapinero. Today's the Day.
